Deck Staining in Cincinnati, OH
Slye's Painting washes, repairs, sands and stains decks across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, so a worn, weathered deck becomes the spot where your family wants to be.
Before: bare wood
After: stainedRevamping your deck one board at a time
Your deck is where the family gathers, where the grill sits and where quiet evenings happen. Since 2015, Michael Slye and his crew have restored outdoor spaces across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, with durable protection that stands up to the elements. Staining is only as good as the wood under it, so we fix the small problems first.
Our deck work covers sanding, scraping, repairing, prepping and treating, along with the staining itself. We take on minor repairs as part of the job, including:
Rotted wood
Soft or spongy boards, rails and posts are cut out and replaced so the stain has sound wood to hold on to.
Cracked and broken boards
Split planks and cracked parts are repaired or swapped before anything is coated.
Damaged studs and framing
Where the structure under the surface is damaged, we address it as part of the repair.
Loose or damaged railings
Wobbly rails and broken balusters are secured or replaced so the finished deck feels solid.
Rough, raised grain
Sanding and scraping take down splinters and old flaking finish for a clean, even surface.
Worn, thirsty wood
Treating and prepping the boards helps the new stain soak in evenly instead of sitting on top.
Wash, repair, sand, stain
Four steps, always in this order. Skipping one is how a stain ends up peeling in a season, so we do not skip any.
- 01
Wash
We clean off dirt, mildew and loose, flaking finish so the wood is bare and ready to take stain. Nothing gets coated over grime.
- 02
Repair
Rotted, cracked or damaged boards, rails and framing are fixed or replaced, so what you stain is worth protecting.
- 03
Sand
We scrape and sand rough spots, raised grain and old patches smooth. This is the prep step that shows in the finished look.
- 04
Stain
The stain goes on evenly across boards, rails and steps, and the wood is left protected against sun and weather.
How often should you re-stain a deck in Ohio Valley weather?
A deck in Cincinnati takes a beating from every direction. Summer sun bakes the boards, spring rain soaks them, and winter freeze and thaw pulls moisture in and pushes it back out. That cycle opens cracks, lifts the grain and turns a good finish gray. How often you need to re-stain depends on how much sun and weather your boards see, the stain that is on them now, and how much foot traffic they carry. A railing in full sun usually wears faster than a covered porch floor. Here is a simple test. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads up, the finish is still working. If it soaks in and darkens the wood, the finish has worn thin and it is time to plan a re-stain. Catching it then keeps the job to a wash, a light sand and a fresh coat, instead of bigger repairs. We can look at your deck and tell you where it stands.

Deck staining questions, answered
How much does deck staining cost in Cincinnati?
Deck staining in Cincinnati is priced by the project, not by a flat number. The main drivers are deck size, the condition of the boards, how much repair is needed, and how many rails and steps are involved. Book an estimate and we will look at your deck and explain what goes into the price.
What is included when you stain a deck?
Our deck staining in Cincinnati covers the full job: washing, repairing, sanding and staining. We scrape and prep the wood, treat it where needed, and then apply the stain to boards, rails and steps. Every project also comes with two years of worry-free touch-ups, which you can read about on our touch-up page.
Can you repair my deck before staining it?
Yes, we handle minor deck repair as part of staining. That includes rotted wood, broken or cracked parts, and damaged studs, planks or railings in Cincinnati homes. Repairs happen before sanding and staining so the finish goes over solid wood. If we find bigger structural problems, we will tell you at the estimate.
How long does deck staining take?
Timing depends on the size of your Cincinnati deck, how much repair it needs, and the weather. Washing and drying come first, then repairs and sanding, then stain. A small, sound deck moves faster than a large one with many rails. When you book an estimate, we will give you a realistic schedule for your project.
Do you stain decks outside Cincinnati?
Yes. We stain decks across Cincinnati and the surrounding Ohio side, including Indian Hill, Norwood, White Oak, Anderson Township, Milford and Loveland. We also work in Northern Kentucky, including Covington, Florence, Fort Thomas, Fort Mitchell, Newport, Erlanger, Independence and Burlington. Book an estimate and tell us where your deck is.
Do I need to stain my deck if it still looks fine?
Not always, but looks can fool you. Wood can lose its protection before the color fades. Sprinkle water on your Cincinnati deck: if it beads up, the finish is still working, and if it soaks in, it is time to plan a re-stain. We can check your deck and give you a straight answer.
